St Columb’s Park in the heart of Derry City was the location for round 8 of the Ulster Cyclocross Series, organised by Foyle CC. Over 200 hardy cyclocrossers made the journey to this fantastic location including 7 Shimna Wheelers. The weather was horrendous; torrential rain, hailstones and gale force wind that could have lifted you and sent you floating down the Foyle. Not to be beaten, our 3 Rockets took to the line in the U8 race. Jonathon Warnock finished in 6th place in the boys race and Grace and Mia McVeigh took 1st and 2nd places respectively in the girls race.
Many commented that the senior course was the best in the Series so far. Foyle CC even managed to provide muck of the perfect consistency around a course that had a bit of everything a cyclocross course should contain.
The mtb support race was first off with Mickey Clarke and Jimmy McVeigh representing the club. They had 5 laps of the course to complete. Mickey finished in 4th place in a hard fought battle and Jimmy finished in 10th place. Next off was the womens race and the B mens race with 6 laps to complete. Martina Hawkins finished in 4th place. Congratulations to Alywnne Shannon from Newry CC who took the win. Peadar Curran finished in 30th place and collected a few more photos of his bike on his shoulder! We had no one racing in the A men this week.
A big thank you must go to Foyle CC for a fantastic day. Superb course, ample parking beside the course, heavenly warm showers in the new Foyle Arena, tea, sandwiches and sweet treats. Not only was there a bike wash but you got your bike washed for you! Top class hospitality, can’t wait till next year. Thanks also to Caolan Hawkins and the Belgian Project media team who recorded the day in finger and toe numbing conditions. Lots of photos on their Flick site.
The final round of the Ulster Series is on Sunday in Falls Park, Belfast and we hope to see a big turnout of Wheelers.
