Ulster Track Cycling League and Championships.

Club success at the Ulster Track Cycling League and Championships.

This year Shimna members took to the track. Our young role model, Chris Neill has been participating on the track for a few years now and was recently selected for the youth U16 squad to represent Ulster in Glasgow in the middle of September. Christopher continues to inspire members, young and older with his determination and success. His father and coach Rodger has played a critical role in his success and indeed was a founder member of Shimna Youth Development. With some gentle encouragement and persuasion from Rodger the track journey started in May this year.

Chris lead the way with Sophie Neill, Noah Stafford, Peter Curran and Callum O’Neill taking up the challenge. Peadar Curran, feeling young at heart, decided to represent the not so young. After a few weeks introduction to a fixed wheel bike at high speeds with no brakes the team did themselves proud. Chris, Peadar, Peter and Callum continued their quest in both the Ulster Track Cycling League and the Ulster Track Championships.

The League took place over six weeks. In the Under 12 Callum and Peter excelled with Callum gaining 2ndand Peter gaining 4th with only a few tenths of a second between all competitors. In the Ulster Championship, Callum was third and Peter fourth. The boys times improved week on week and are already looking forward to next season. In the Under 16 Boys Chris took 3rd place in the league despite missing the final heat due to preparations for the Irish National Road Championships in Carlow. The M40 provided plenty of entertainment, Rocky v Ivan Drago style, between Peadar and Pedro (Pedro McBride from Banbridge CC) who were neck and neck right to the line with Peadar taking 1st place in both the League and Championship. This will motivate Peadar for his first year as an M50 next year.

Our supporters club was second to none and made the whole experience a team effort. The track has proved to be an amazing discipline and one which is undervalued in our small nation. Hopefully more members will join us next year for the experience.

SWCC Round 4 XC Ulster League

Shimna Wheelers CC will be hosting Round 4 of the Ulster Cross Country (XC) league. Club members have been preparing this new course in Castlewellan Park over the last few weeks and it is looking in good shape.

The Start/Finish Area will be located in one of the Scout Camp Fields just off the Crow’s Road within Castlewellan Forest Park. It will be clearly signed from the main Carpark.
Main course starts on grass area and then proceeds onto an old harvesting trail with a nice sharp climb before continuing onto the Trail Centre the wrong direction!
The course then heads back onto a great natural wooded section with two ditches to climb over before getting back to a short fire road section.
On to more Trail Centre Course with some technical sections before a fast but cautious sharp decent into a natural forest at the back of park.
After that it’s a fast spin down a fire road with some time to get a breath of air before another short natural section which will take you on a section of Trail Centre.
Back on to another grass area which takes you towards a rock garden section beside the Pump Track and then it’s the last push home towards the Start/Finish. Course is 3.4 miles.
Kids course will be based in and around the Start/Finish Area and will run over various distances, all will include natural sections, grass, paths and Trail Centre Routes.
There will be some limited parking in the Scout Camp Fields beside the Start/Finish and this will be for people with gazebos. Anyone wishing to park in this area needs to be there before 9:30 am

One more field slightly further down Crows Road will be available but after that traffic will have to park in main carpark. It is only a 5 minute walk away.

Castlewellan Forest Park has lots of facilities for all the family including play areas, a maze and the lake walk.  There is a camp site which can be booked through the Forestry website.
